When I Called You by Name You Came to Me and Became a Flower
Korean Folk Art by Gemma Joon Bae
Reception: Thu, Apr 6, 7–8:30pm
I have been painting with traditional Korean ink techniques learned since an early age from my grandfather, father—a renowned calligrapher in my hometown—and old teachers in Korea. Upon moving to Salt Lake City in 1984, I took a break from art to raise my family, but began painting and writing again some time in the late 1990s and received a BFA from the University of Utah.
My old training influences my work today, as well as my spirituality. My paintings strive to express a truth behind what is seen. I paint with thanks toward living things. In the narratives of my paintings, I want to reveal an Eastern philosophy through symbols and metaphors. Like a line in an old poem, I hope that my work is sensed and stays in the heart, and that I might slip meaning in the hearts of those that see my paintings.
